Main function of the job

The Consultant Psychiatrist will work in an acute psychiatric inpatient unit, managing patients with severe mental health conditions, including psychosis, bipolar disorder, depression, personality disorders, comorbid addictions, and self-harm risk.

Responsibilities within this role include

  • Conduct psychiatric assessments, reviews, and risk management
  • Coordinate care with multidisciplinary teams (psychologists, nurses, OT, social workers)
  • Ensure compliance with NICE guidelines, hospital policies, and Mental Health Act regulations
  • Participate in clinical governance, service improvement, and training
  • Support CPD (5 days study leave annually) and pursue postgraduate training
  • Contacting family, carers and relevant professionals in the community to obtain any information required to plan the patients care.
  • Undertaking work required in terms of the admission of new patients. This includes the completion of a standard admission document which will include a full psychiatric history, physical examination and initial risk assessment.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Recognized medical degree & full GMC registration
  • 8+ years hospital experience (Psychiatry/Paediatrics/General Medicine)
  • Experience in acute and community psychiatric settings
  • Strong communication skills, ability to work independently & in teams
